The power of "grassroots" advocacy has never been more apparent than it is in the history of NYSARC. From children with disabilities with no educational opportunities, to children in school basements, to fully integrated classrooms. From individuals with disabilities being "warehoused" in institutions, to individuals living in community residences, to those same folks now owning their own homes. The power of grassroots action by NYSARC families, friends, and volunteers literally led this state to "sit up and take notice" of the rights of children and adults with developmental disabilities.
The Action Center provides NYSARC's volunteers, parents, consumers and employees the ability, through e-mail, to instantly convey their opinions to decision makers, including state legislators, the Governor and members of the US Congress.
Electronic communication is playing an increasingly significant role in legislative and governmental advocacy. It gives key officials the ability to assess their own positions using the instantaneous feedback of their constituents. |
