Legislative Advocate Network (LAN)

NYSARC is built on a basic philosophy: People with intellectual and other developmental disabilities are entitled to all of the rights and dignity accorded to every citizen.

Our philosophy has distinguished us since 1949, giving us moral standing that translates into real influence in government as it affects the operations of our chapters and the lives of the people we support.

Progress has always been tied to key federal and state legislation and programs. Federal legislation such as the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act mark enormous strides forward.

In New York, legislation creating the first community residence program, a separate Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and, recently, the Health Care Decisions Act for Persons with Mental Retardation are just some of the legislative accomplishments we have successfully lobbied for.
